In February of 2016, McCarthy set out on a series of sold out solo shows in Europe. In the aftermath of the band’s separation, McCarthy’s commitment to contributing music and art to the world persevered unscathed. The group disbanded amicably in Autumn 2016, fatigued by the financial challenges which were endemic in the rapidly changing music industry at that time. The band were later signed (Votiv records) and finished the record, releasing it as their debut album Rise Ye Sunken Ships on June 6, 2011.
Armed with an unshakable commitment to get the work out, McCarthy and Sanderson set out as a two-piece folk act called Augustines, leveraging the support of their fan-base over the traditional label system that had long frustrated them.Īfter a handful of tours as a duo and with promotion and support from Seattle’s DJ John Richards (KEXP) McCarthy and Sanderson searched for a drummer, thereby forming a three-piece band with Robert Allen. Together with former bandmate bassist and multi-instrumentalist Eric Sanderson, he began to imagine a new path in music to get the unfinished album completed. The period following Pela’s split was one of deep reflection for McCarthy. Pela split in 2009 with a half-finished album and a devastated fanbase. McCarthy’s first band Pela were renowned for punching above their weight and critics celebrated the ambitious lyrical subject matter and high-octane performances which became the band’s signature. How could they? They are Augustines.” (Louder than War, 2014) Nobody wants to leave, and one thing you can say about this band is they never outstay their welcome. At the end of the set,the encores started to seem longer than the rest of the show. Like the intimacy of their music, they are just about as genuine as you can get and the contact between them and their audience is as personal as if it was in your own front room.
